grizzly grizzly / VOIR- | VER- / august 7 - 30, 2025
Voyeurism is not simply the act of watching—it is an invitation into the private, the unspoken, and the unseen. In VOIR- / VER-, two artist collectives from opposite ends of the United States engage in a creative dialogue where the gaze becomes both a tool and a mirror. Through this collaboration, the artists explore the tension between observer and observed, interrogating the boundaries of intimacy, distance, and the power of perception.
"Voir" (to see) and "Ver" (to watch) are not passive acts; they are forms of engagement. Each collective operates from a distinct geographical and cultural perspective—yet in this space, they meet, reflect, and challenge one another's vantage points. As these artists turn their lenses on each other, the exhibition becomes a dual reflection.
Through various media, including photography, video, performance, and installation, VOIR- / VER- amplifies the tension between private realities and public consumption. How do we negotiate our desire to watch and our discomfort in being watched? How does space—both literal and metaphorical—shape what we see and what is unseen?
In an age where the act of watching is both omnipresent and invisible, this exhibition dissects voyeurism not only as a gaze but as an exchange—one that questions the ethics of visibility, control, and desire. Each work invites viewers to navigate the fine line between observation and intrusion, creating an immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between proximity and distance, connection and alienation.
The title, VOIR- / VER-, becomes more than a linguistic gesture—it is a bridge that connects two coasts, two collectives, and two worlds of experience. As these artists watch each other, they invite us to question who is really watching whom.
This exhibition was organized by former member of after / time, Kaitlyn Carr.
